Network Effect
by Martha Wells
This is the first novel in a series of short novellas and I was curious about how the author handled that. I must say I didn't like the pacing of the first 40% or so, it was so full of action and high tension without any breathing time that I was feeling anxious every time I picked the book. Also, this is the most self-indulgent book in the series - so much it felt quite fanservice-y.
That being said, I liked it a lot. I don't mind self-indulgence; in fact, it's one of the reasons I like the series so much. The humor was there, the human characters were well developed and likable thanks to the book being longer, and of course, ART <3
I'm going to buy physical copies of the series and reread them quite often, I just know that. I can't wait for the next installment (thankfully, I won't have to wait long).
P.S. I promised myself I won't comment on politics, but Preservation's socialistic utopia is so unrealistic I had to roll my eyes repeatedly. On the other hand, I have no problem believing in evil corporations exploiting humans and not caring about people's lives. I guess that says a lot about my faith in humanity...
