We Are Totally Normal
by Naomi Kanakia
Overall, I found it a shock to see sexuality portrayed like this. I didn't enjoy the way the characters went about discussing sexuality and feel like if the book was more oriented in the main character figuring things out slowly and with more supportive friends (ie friends that didn't immediately jump to conclusions and not hold him accountable for his horrible actions) instead of bundling together a lot of harmful stereotypes along with the main characters obnoxious behaviour, then maybe i would have enjoyed it better. The concept for this story is great, a teen questioning his sexuality and experimenting with a friend in the same boat is a cool idea. But when you make their relationship nothing but sex and drinking, it becomes somewhat of a bad idea. I just feel like if the main character had a single brain cell and some will power to learn, he would have researched about what he was feeling and come to terms that he's probably bisexual and asexual or aromantic (but I don't want to label him anymore than theorising) Instead, he plays with the feelings of someone who truly loves him and throws him away once he's had his fun. It's sad to see gay couples portrayed like this when we already have so much prejudice against us in the first place. And yeah, even though some of the supporting characters are "trying their hardest" they're still homophobic and no one calls them out on it or even tries to start a conversation to educate them and the reader.
Also, this has nothing to do with the book but since the narrator for the audiobook that I listened to was so annoying and really got on my nerves, I found it a bad experience overall.
