Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

It is not often that I like other people’s book suggestions. Often times, the suggestion are never as profound to me as they are to the person that suggested the book. It’s the same way when I suggest books to other people.

Thankfully after following Reese Witherspoon’s Instagram page I decided to read another book she suggested. Most of the books she has suggested I deeply loved.

Here is a story of young woman name Katherine but people called her Kya or Marsh Girl. She lived below the poverty level in a small village in the 60s through the 70s. Kya was born into a family with three older siblings, a mother, and father. Her father used her mother’s body as batting practice. When the mother left, the father, a veteran with demons in his closet, turned his rage towards the three oldest siblings. At the age of 8 all of Kya’s siblings left the home. Blinded by anger Kya’s father tried to abuse her as well.

Growing up in the Marsh Kya didn’t know how to read or take care of her self. As a preteen her father abandoned her and never returned. As a child, a person name Tate became her only friend. Tate taught her how to read, guided her through womanhood, helped nourish her love for naturalism field, and became her first, and only true love. Unfortunately, Tate went off to college, graduate school, then doctoral school, and abandoned Kya like her family did. Shortly after Tate went to college, Kya fell for another boy name Chase. At first he was everything she thought she ever wanted. His intentions turned out to not be good and he tried to assault her. Kya experienced a lot of trauma and abandonment. The village gossiped about her and never gave her an opportunity to fit in.

.... I will stop there. It’s a must read! I strongly suggest that you read this book experience the complicated relationship between Tate and Kya and the people closet to them.
