The Key to Midnight
by Dean Koontz
Dean Koontz claims this the same book he published while having took 30,000 words out and is apparently nothing like his other work. If you say so Koontz, I'm not going to read any of his other work to find out. It kinda funny that this was once published under a woman's name when it's so obvious Man.
I mean the Male protagonist is a Gary Sue (needs only 4 hours of sleep, millionaire before thirty, knows all the languages and slang) and it's full of these power fantasies. The female protagonist sleeps naked and I need to disclose trigger warnings to talk about her characterisation. Trigger Warning: sexual assault, rape and general violence against woman. She is so hot that every man who ever seen her wants her and most are willing to take her by force. This is a romance so it is probably aimed at woman (and with the pen name) but none of this shit is fun for woman to read. I don't want to read a scene where bodybuilder almost kills a woman while fantasizing about keeping the the main character as sex slave and how it would be hot for her to have the mental age of 4. Such fun reading. Maybe all this is the extra 5000 words added in.
This also has the 'Aromantic until they meet the one' trope. It's the most interesting about Gary Sue and while not being virgins, they want for their first time to be special.
This book is mainly set in Japan and if someone wants to tackle that portrayal, go head because I'm not touching that bucket. It's your typical Cold War nonsense and the good old days where Nazis were automatically the bad guys. As about as original as straight saying the novels you were inspired by in the book.
It's set in London and Koontz never fully translates the Japanese but has several pages about Cookney Ryhming slang fully translated. Great. fun.
Joanna lived so it gets two stars. It's such the standard of Male writer and didn't make me mad so it doesn't get one star. Wow, the world is fucked that this shit is just the norm.
