Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
4.5

I really loved this book. It is exciting and gripping, and full of twists and turns (some of which I saw coming and others I did not). I found it very difficult to put the book down for essentials like work and sleep.

There have been a lot of comparisons made between Project Hail Mary and Weir's previous book The Martian; and there are some similarities, mostly in terms of style. Both books are written in chatty first person, with frequent use of flashbacks and a general feel of optimism even in the midst of disaster.  It's also true that both books include lone astronauts stranded far from Earth. However, the plots are very different, and so, I would argue, are the main characters. (I've seen reviewers who don't agree with me on this!) I loved both books, though The Martian is my favourite of the two.

The audiobook narration by Ray Porter is just about perfect. I did find that on occasion I had to go back a little and listen to a section again in order to understand the science (this was also the case with The Martian), but to be fair I was also listening on double speed.

Highly recommended.
