Digital minimalism was fine. I don’t use social media so I felt that its arguments about quitting Facebook, twitter. Instagram et al. were not very applicable to me. The discussion about how people keep checking their phones all the time and the implications of mental health of the “iGen” (read: “Gen Z”which was a term that existed when this book was first published so idk why he didn’t use it, aside from being out of touch) have been litigated for the past ten years. Cal Newport doesn’t even use social media so I don’t know why he thought he could throw his hat into the ring. I think I might just have a grudge against this man’s self help books after reading Deep Work which pissed me off so deeply with the way it constructed value that I wrote a 1300 word essay in my notes app.
