The Bullet Swallower
by Elizabeth Gonzalez James
This was a fun read! I paired it with the audio which definitely helped me as I read through it.
Antonio went on such an adventure to seek revenge on his brother's death while on a treasure heist. His brother's death was very sad and even though I knew it was going to happen didn't make it easier when it happened. He is a the definition of strong willed. We meet a cast of characters along the way before he makes his way back home. There was another character that we meet later on that I really loved & I thought him and Antonio worked so well together!!
This was told from two dual timelines - Antonio in 1895 and Jamie in 1964. Jamie was trying to learn more about his past as his father did not want to talk about any of it. Jamie's part really didn't interest me but did play a part as we got closer to the end.
I did struggle with finding the magical realism of it all. I thought there was going to be more but it really only came through (that I'm aware) in the last little bit of the book. The last two-three chapters were SO beautiful and had so much heart in it. And I thought it ended really well.
I love that the author took inspiration from her own grandfather which I thought was really cool & she has a photo of him on her instagram page.
I am glad I read this and gave a genre that I normally don't read a try. I would recommend having the text with the audio.
Check this out if you are looking for a quick western told in dual timelines!
