This felt, like it should not be a book on its own. I haven't read the third in this series yet, but I bet you could have put all three together into one longer book instead of splitting it in three and wasting peoples' time.
America's so annoying, skittish, even for a seventeen-year-old. Just make a decision and get over it.
All that kept me interested was the history of the country.

I guess, I'm just too old for this whole emotional turmoil thing, too old for this kind of young adult. Maybe I should settle for "adult, but not feeling like an adult" where the main characters are my age...
