Though Iβd originally read ππ‘π ππ¨πππ’π in primary school & ππ‘π ππ¨π«π π¨π ππ‘π ππ’π§π π¬ in secondary school, I had never before undertaken ππ‘π ππ’π₯π¦ππ«π’π₯π₯π’π¨π§, & fresh out of my re-read of the other books & desperate for more of both Tolkienβs writing & Andy Serkisβs flawless narration seemed the perfect time to do it.
A little different to the other books, ππ‘π ππ’π₯π¦ππ«π’π₯π₯π’π¨π§ is a collection of stories that make up the mythology & pantheon of Middle Earth. The scope & richness of the tales are a testament to Tolkienβs commitment to his world, & the existence of them is a large part of what makes ππ‘π ππ¨πππ’π & ππ‘π ππ¨π«π π¨π ππ‘π ππ’π§π π¬ so epic.
I wonβt pretend that I found ππ‘π ππ’π₯π¦ππ«π’π₯π₯π’π¨π§ the easiest read - the stories spanning eons of history & containing an array of characters & places, many of which have both names that are very similar to one another, & different names in different languages & dialects - but it was definitely a rewarding one & I canβt wait for my next re-read of ππ‘π ππ¨π«π π¨π ππ‘π ππ’π§π π¬ now that I know a lot more about the wider context of the story.
