The Bone Shard Daughter
by Andrea Stewart
I am so disappointed in myself that it took me this long to read this! I am actually kind of glad that I didn’t have to wait very long to jump into book two. I’m currently reading it and already hooked.
“When a shark offers up a pearl, be wary of its teeth. My father liked to tell me that when we were sailing, though I found this lesson most often applied on land.”
One of my favorite things about this book is how easy it was to fall into this story. I always have a hard time with fantasies when you are immediately hit with many info dumps. Stewart, has a brilliant way of easing you in and still expanding her world. I actually never felt like any of the world-building was lacking. I was quickly sucked into the story. The pacing of the plot is a little slow in the beginning but I didn’t mind it too much. We really get to know all of our characters and then the last part of the book really takes off.
We get several POV’s in this book and I quite enjoyed it. We learn about many characters and all the pieces that start moving towards each other. The characters are really amazing and it was so hard to find a stopping point. Sometimes when I’m reading multiple POV’s, there’s always one I don’t care for as much. It did not happen in this book. I was equally invested in all of them and so it was hard to flip the page and stop when a new chapter started.
The actual bone-shard magic was really unique. It’s definitely a more grey area, because it’s cool but yet very sad, at the same time. I don’t want to delve too much into it because this is spoiler-free. It is definitely something that will stand out among all the magic I read about.
“Listening is an art. It’s not so much sometimes in letting the other person speak as it is in asking the right questions.”
Overall, this was a very good read. I loved the magic and getting to know the characters. I will say, I did not love the ending as much as I was hoping. I felt like things ended a little too easily and pretty. There is a lot of intrigue for the next book but I wanted a little more from the ending. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. Definitely, a book to keep on your radar.
