My Aunt Is a Monster
by Reimena Yee
This was very cute, and I really enjoyed the story. It was a classic adventure story with some definitely modern additions. I really love Reimena Yee’s art style, and I think it really added to the overall story.
The protagonist, Sofia, is a blind girl, which I haven’t seen often in books, and it’s definitely the first time in a middle grade graphic novel. Very cool representation-wise, and I love how her blindness was integrated into the story, and it wasn’t ever depicted as a hindrance in Safia’s life.
Also: I’m always a fan of casually queer side characters, especially in kids’ books. There’s one who uses they/them pronouns, and another male character who dresses in feminine clothing. It’s never a big deal, and it’s just part of these characters’ identities. And I love it!
