Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson
3.0
slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

i can see why other people enjoyed and even loved this but for me it lacked too much to be something i could enjoy fully.

the writing was beautiful but also felt like it kept the reader purposefully at a distance and the second person narration nor the time and moment jumps did not help with understanding or feeling connected to the characters.

the  characters themselves felt  underdeveloped and more like a character idea than  something that is a completely developed character to read about.
the characters and how they behaved… it all felt so   one-dimensional to me.
the writing style didn’t help with this but maybe at least giving them names would have helped?

i don’t know.

with the praise and all the reviews that say they loved how it was done and it was such an emotional read for them…. maybe i am just not the right reader for this book.

for me this was a book that showed potential but. both with it was written and how short it was it felt more like an overview of a story that is waiting to be fully fleshed out and completely written instead of a completely finished story.

i can see the potential but for me there wasn’t enough of it overall to be able to love it. but short contemporary stories rarely if not never work for me since i really want to get to know characters and their life or at least their current situation to love it so… clearly a good amount of my personal al tastes and wants to enjoy a book didn’t fit with this particular book which is my personal thing.
