I had very mixed feelings about this book, with my feelings changing significantly through the course of the story. (Mild spoilers below.)
I loved the beginning, the events on Earth with Regan as a child discovering that she was intersex were so well written that for the first time I was actually slightly disappointed when the door appeared and she was whisked away to another world as the storyline effectively ceased.
I then enjoyed the introduction to the Hooflands, a world populated with multiple different species of mythological equines. I liked the characters and what there was of the worldbuilding (though more of it would have been nice, but then it is only a novella). I did feel that the writing up to this point felt a little as if it was for a younger audience than the previous books in the Wayward Children series.
The ending though I actively disliked. It was incredibly rushed, with revelations that didn't entirely make sense, events that happened in the blink of an eye, and an abrupt finish that left me wanting the other 50% of the story. Perhaps McGuire is planning to return to Regan in a future book? I hope so, as I think there is much more of her story to tell.
