Change Is Required: Preparing for the Post-Pandemic Museum by Marsha L. Semmel, Ken Yellis, Avi Y. Decter
4.0

An important book, not just for museums, but anyone in the nonprofit cultural sector. The "twin pandemics" exposed so many of the faults in our systems. This book gathers the thoughts of many museum leaders, sharing both what they're doing to make systemic change as well as the thoughts guiding them. Though published by the American Association of State and Local History, there are plenty of essays from art and science museums as well--which I really appreciate.

This book gave me plenty of food for thought, and I'll definitely be sharing some essays with clients as they grapple with how to build for the post-pandemic world. My own quibble is that I would have appreciated more on the board dynamic. For many institutions, change can only go so far if there is a resistant, powerful board--even if there is an incredibly dynamic, progressive executive director. As we wrestle with staff hierarchy, it's also time to wrestle with the board hierarchy.
