Children of Blood and Bone
by Tomi Adeyemi
I put off reading this one for a very long time...I think mostly because of the hype. And I think it was a good choice to do that. I really enjoyed my read, but it wasn't the 5-star that I think I would have expected if I would have read at the height of its release. Instead, I was able just to enjoy it and not really expect too much.
There is A LOT of action in this book. That was highly impressive. The plot is great and it moves fantastically. I don't think there was a dull moment from beginning to end. There was constantly something relevant happening. Very little fluff. I appreciate that.
I did have some issues with character development, specifically the tendency toward what appeared to be instalove in more than one case. There were also some awkward places in the writing with regard to dialogue and some cliched phrase use/repetition that had me cringing on occasion ("I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding" was used more than once).
Overall, I very much enjoyed my read. There is a lot of imagination and creativity in these pages and it did not feel like a 500+ page book because of how well it was constructed. I will absolutely be continuing the series.
