Tarikshir: The Awakening
by Khayaal Patel
My Rating : 3.5
This book revolves around Rudra, who is facing the wrath of the British army invasion of India and is also trying to figure out the mystery behind the death of his father and the people around him. It also combines the concept from Ramayana (one of my fav epic saga) and the British invasion which is a really interesting combination !
Thank you so much to the author for providing me with a review copy in exchange for an honest review. All views are my own and is not influenced in any way.
First of all, the base concept of combining two very different things, one an epic story happened eons ago, and one history event that changed the fate of many countries, is very intriguing. That was the first thing that attracted me to the story. The story starts with what happened after the Epic battle between Rama and Ravana was won, and how the concept of Sons of Hanuman came into picture. Without giving much away, the first chapter is what sets the tone to the entire story and it was done quite well !
Now coming to the plot structure, the way this story progressed was not really something you would expect. There are a lot of things you get to discover along with out main character Rudra, and sometimes it doesn't make sense. The fact that his mind voice and the actual dialogues are written in the same format was quite confusing. The flow of the story was not helping with the plot. Sometimes you wonder what the story is trying to convey. But despite all of that, you get the answers you are looking for, just not in your conventional story flow way. I was slightly disappointed with that alone. I think with the concept this book had, there could have been much more done with how the story unfolded.
Coming to the characters, I am not sure I have any favorites, but I loved the character of Samsheer(Rudra's uncle). There were a lot of characters introduced, and they all play their own part, but I think his character was the wholesome one with a lot of character depth. I don't know whether I like Rudra or not. His character traits are exactly what you generally see in a teenage boy. You have a kingdom to save, a monster to kill, but the moment you see a girl all you think about is her. It was actually really funny to navigate through his thoughts but irritating as well. I think a little more character introductions, depth to more of the characters introduced would have been better.
Overall, I really loved what this book had to bring to the table, the concepts were really good, I was not a big fan of the writing style, but it was not hindering my reading experience, the character range was quite good, and especially that ending!. If you are a fan of mythology, or history, I thin you would really love the mix between the two that was done in this book.
