by Rupi Kaur
This flows well into Kaur’s existing repertoire of poetry but has the same issues as her previous books. While her poems evoke strong emotions, the language used is oftentimes simplistic. I found her sections this time around weren’t tied into the title concept as well as the other times, it felt almost hand-holding and prescriptive. I also felt that her final political section didn’t fit as well into the others and it took me out of the experience. My last critique is that a few of her shorter pieces also read more like tweets instead of poems and that while they had strong messages, they didn’t strike the same tone as a poem. I really enjoyed her metaphors and her longer form poems.
