What took me so long to pick this up? Well I think I was scared to be let down- FYI I was most certainly not let down.

My first read by Colson Whitehead it took me a chapter or two to get the feel for his style, but after that I was enamored. The way he so casually goes from describing individuals and their histories straight into atrocities inflicted on them in a single sentence is wholly gut-wrenching. I read this slow so as not to get overwhelmed and to better appreciate the supreme level of writing.

I simply can't imagine what it took for him to delve so deeply into research on slavery and then make it his own my imagining the Underground Railroad as an actual railroad... the sheer fantasy of it made it a touch more accessible and entertained as it devastated. Amazing.
