The Smoke at Dawn
by Jeff Shaara
I am a big Jeff Shaara fan and I have enjoyed all of his writings of the seminal points of American war history—the American Revolution, the U.S. Civil War and World War II. The Smoke at Dawn is the third work covering the “western theater” of the U.S. Civil War this time centering on the aftermath of the fighting at Chickamauga Creek and the conflict at Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain. Shaara puts the human faces of war in focus from Grant, Sherman, Bragg and Longstreet to the frontline soldiers. A master storyteller at his finest.
