I picked up this book because the two librarians from my high school library (bless their souls) were telling me that I needed to read it. I learned in high school to read every book they give me, even if I wouldn’t have originally picked it up, because everything that they have given me, I have loved. In a way, they are my wonderful book fairies :). This book was already on my radar, so when they started raving about it I knew that I had to pick it up as soon as I could. Thankfully (!!!!!!) this book has been my savior! It has broken my five star drought. It gave me hope again!
The first thing that caught my attention with this book was the magical realism. I don’t know if I can explain my love for magical realism. I fell in love as soon as I read the incredible and magical writing that Jandy Nelson brought to this story. I took a trip to whimsical writing town while reading this book. I’ve missed this town. I want to fall in love, make a home and have kids in whimsical writing town. (Okay, I’m done with this analogy.)
I love (LOVE) alternating chapters and the structure of this book did not disappoint. To be 100% honest, I enjoyed Noah’s POV a lot more than Jude’s. It’s not that Jude’s POV wasn’t interesting, because it was, but there was just something about Noah and his voice that made me hold my breath. The titles of Noah’s portraits gave me life. (Noah in general. I love him.)
I didn’t/couldn’t find anything wrong with this book, however, I feel like there was something missing. (Not from the end. The end was extremely beautiful and made me squeal.) I think that they’re certain books that are not supposed to be perfect. They’re perfect because of their imperfections. This was one of those books for me. I really enjoyed it and I’m really glad I got to it <3
Overall, I absolutely loved the experience I had while reading this book. It was absolutely wonderful. Thank you Mrs. Nichols and Mrs. Louie for pushing me to read this sooner. I’m really glad that I picked it up when I did :)
