Don't You Forget About Me
by Mhairi McFarlane
“It began with four words.
I love your laugh x”
What would you do if the boy you liked from sixth form... I mean, really, really liked... didn't remember you at all? This is the dilemma Georgina (George, Gog) Horspool faces in Don't You Forget About Me when she gets a job working at the newly re-opened pub, The Wicker for Devlin, who happens to be Georgina's ex of twelve years, Lucas McCarthy's "nails" brother.
From what I can see so far on our book club Facebook discussions, a lot of readers found the book to be slow going to start with, but definitely up-put-downable once you get into it. Personally, and much to the dismay of my boyfriend who has been patiently waiting on the bacon sarnies I promised him two hours ago (I'm writing this on a Sunday morning), I found this book brilliantly funny and enthralling from the off! Super easy, face-paced and fun to read, Don't You Forget About Me is a book that can be enjoyed by everyone.
Mhairi has done a superb job of creating characters worth reading about. George is a believable, charmingly flawed thirty-year-old who desperately wants to make it as a writer (don't we all?) but has been left with little option but to work in a less than desirable faux-Italian restaurant (haven't we all?) and her life hasn't turned out quite how she expected it to. I feel ya, girl! There are plenty of hilarious twists and turns to keep any reader thoroughly entertained. I won't give away too many spoilers as I'd love you to to enjoy the reveal as much as I did!
