omqchristi 's review for:
The Sun and Her Flowers
by Rupi Kaur
Readability: 2/5
Plot: 2/5
Recommend: No
The Sun and Her Flowers is a collection of poetry about grief, self-abandonment, love, and more, split into 5 chapters.
What they don't tell you is that the book flits from one topic to the other randomly and with no real transition. One second Kaur is talking about immigration and the next, she talks about female infanticide. Later, from sex positivity to the standards in the beauty industry. And there are many more rapid transitions like these.
I felt like the book was trying too hard to be woke and really new age. It was obviously pushing an agenda of self-love, confidence, and embracing one's roots. It was trying way too hard to be meaningful. It fell flat and wasn't impactful.
This time, the format and writing style made me skim a lot of the book. It made me want to flip the page every second or two, meaning I didn't spend a lot of time on this book. The lack of punctuation made me skim lines rather than pause to read the words. This wasn't a case of I was super excited to read this book, so I read it as fast as I could. It was the case of me trying to finish this book so I didn't have to read it anymore.
