The Golden Compass
by Philip Pullman
His Dark Materials is perhaps the only series that I really truly love other than Harry Potter and it's one of those books that I love to re-read from time to time without ever getting bored. I even think that this book is one of the very first book I read when I was a kid. One day I was in the bookstore with my family, it was back then when my Dad used to care to accompany me shopping for books and he chose to buy me The Golden Compass. He even spoke highly about it even though he hadn't read it himself, urging me to buy the book and I half-heartedly had to do as he said.
I remember when I first read it I was immediately in love with Lyra and Pan. The book started with them sneaking into places, listening to stuff they shouldn't've, and did rebellious things all around the academy. I also remember in the 6th grade I was so in love with anything English related that when I read this book takes place in Oxford I was just thrilled . After I finished this one I just had to buy the second and third book to know more about Lyra's adventure. Soon enough I'd bring this book to school, showing it off to anyone who would listen. My classmate and neighbour at that time, Callista, took the bait and read The Golden Compass and I was so glad when she liked it too. We quickly became close-knitted friends and we started swapping books to read (i lent her the flood family, all the books from his dark materials series, and a bunch of other books i don't remember). I even still had Callista's writing in my The Golden Compass copy of the date when she read it.
Just like Harry Potter, I don't think that I would love His Dark Materials as much as I do now if I read it now when I'm a grown up. I love this book and the memory of my childhood that goes with it and when I talk about this series, I also must talk about how my Dad was the one who get me into this book and the time when my friend borrowed it and how then we became best friend because of it. I know that years from now I would still love this book just like the first time I opened the crisp, new pages.
It's a book about adventure, friendship, love, all the theme that I highly regard in all my favourite books & series. If you have not read this, I suggest that you do. Immediately.
