More Than This
by Patrick Ness
I liked it. I almost loved it. But I didn't.
Okay so Patrick Ness is one hell of a writer. I fucking love Chaos Trilogy. So I went into this with high expectations. Kind of let down, but I do like the overall themes and messages it's trying to convey as I read.
So going through Seth's life with him is both interesting (and the past being the best part) and also walking with him through this new "world". Is intriguing idea. At first you believe he's in hell. Then maybe the future. Then maybe there's more to uncover, and like always, Ness set's up plenty of great reveals.
Seth's natural dialog with friends is the best part next to the actual past events. I'm a sucker for events that destroy people personally and damn, if Seth's background isn't all fucked up. No spoilers, but this dude has a shitty high school (and in general) life. Also I did indeed love having the main character be gay, cause I just don't think it's done enough, and added big layers to his character.
On the flip side the whole "Twist" was easy to see coming. However, that wasn't my issue, my issue was it wasn't a powerful turn of events. I didn't feel anything, I didn't really enjoy the direction, and that's with understanding the idea behind it. I just thought it lacked execution.
Overall I enjoyed it, Patrick Ness is a solid writer, but this my least favorite of his work. Still, solid and enjoyable story overall.
