Magic Tests by Ilona Andrews

relaxing fast-paced

This cover has absolutely nothing to do with the contents! Why it's been chosen I don't know, but this series has uniformly terrible covers, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. (I don't know why they're all so terrible, but the books deserve better.)

Anyway, this is a short story set in the Kate Daniels universe, in which Kate's young ward Julie gets sent to a private school, ostensibly to look for a missing girl, but really to make friends and to discover a school that she might like to go to. Historically, schools have not been good places for Julie, so it makes sense that she's suspicious of formal education and doesn't want to try anymore. It does not make sense as to why Kate just didn't send her to this particular magic academy in the first place, but whatever, I'm going with it. The story zips along quite nicely. It's a short, enjoyable read, and if there were a young adult spin-off series focusing on Julie at school with her new friends I'd totally read it.
