ros_lanta 's review for:
Freedom's Landing
by Anne McCaffrey
I first read the Catteni series as a teenager and it became possibly my favourite McCaffrey series after Pern. It's a series with aliens, a new colony, rebellion and, eventually, its aftermath. It also has romance.
Reading it again many years later I can see that there are some flaws and ways in which the book sadly does not hold up as well today. Everything happens a bit too easily with too many of the unwilling colonists happening to have needed skills. That only mildly annoyed me, but a bigger criticism concerns the first scenes in book one. These started out as a soft porn short story I remember reading in an anthology years ago, which from what I recall was essentially rape fantasy (to my knowledge McCaffrey's only attempt at porn). While the scenes were reworked for the novel and the sex/rape removed, it leads to an awkward introduction that makes it hard at first to root for the love interest when you're not quite sure if he would have committed rape as the main character thought he intended (before she knocked him unconscious). It isn't really dealt with later either. One final issue is that there's a scene where someone with a fear of heights is treated with absolutely no empathy - while he's an extremely unlikeable character, this isn't an excuse for the way he is treated.
I did enjoy my reread however, and I think despite these flaws it's an interesting book. The worldbuilding is really interesting with all the different alien species and cultures. I know it is followed by much more action packed sequels as the resistance really takes off, and I do intend to reread the other books, probably later this year.
