I found the writing style in Shadow and Bone very readable, but I wasn't fully connected to the plot. It started well and initially I was enjoying it a lot, but ultimately the plot just felt too simple with not enough happening to really keep my interest. Some of the characters and worldbuilding did appeal to me but I would have preferred them to be given more time and attention. 

Overall it is not a bad book, just underwhelming in comparison to a lot of the hype it gets. Possibly if I were a teenager (the target audience) I would have appreciated it more, but as an adult reader I really wanted more.
