The Young Elites by Marie Lu
4.0

This was not the book that I thought it would be and that is great thing. Let's start with a image. Take Divergent, thrown in some Unberto Echo Name of the Rose, and then dash in superhero powers. Once that has been blended and poured, you have a tall drink of Young Elites.

The Young Elites are a group of young adults who had the misfortune to have a plague like illness. This illness left them with extraordinary powers. But the crown does not what them to exist any longer. They are considered abominations that need to be eradicated as soon as possible. Adelina never knew she was an Elite, until she accidentally kills her father with an illusion of shadow monsters. Now she is a wanted young lady under the protection of the Young Elites, while they fight for a change in government. But even the crown wants a change in government, and only one side can win

This book is a fantasy that feels like a historical novel. There are so many things to talk about that is hard to know where to start. There are no heroes, but sometimes you have to wonder if the villains are really villains. Friends are dangerous, and enemies can be helpful. And the ending is left so open that the 10 days wait to book number 2 will be a hard pill to swallow.

I read this with a group of teens for our local book club. On the last meeting on this book they all told me they hated it, but just because they didn't realize there was a sequel.
