Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
4.0

7 years ago, the King destroyed Lei's life when her mother is taken (and thought killed). Now they are back, for her. The girl with the gold eyes that intrigue the King. She is to become a Paper Girl.

Lei is a Paper caste. The lowest caste in the kingdom. There are also Steel castes (humans with demon partial animal forms) and Moon castes (fully demon animal forms).

There is a trigger warning at the beginning of the book that I fully appreciate. Paper Girls are meant to train as concubines to the King. You can imagine that not all Paper girls will stand for this. But also the King will not care. I also appreciate the LGBTQIA+ representation. Lei and Wren are a beautiful love story. Wren also has a plan, a plan that can bring the kingdom to its knees.

This book is a fantasy lovers dream, I think! The world is well built and you get enough background into the world even as the action just keeps pulling you along.

The book is beautifully set up for the second in the series.
