How to Kill Your Family
by Bella Mackie
I knew I’d read this book from the time I laid my eyes on it. The title caught my interest almost immediately and the cover sealed the deal. A young woman of 28 years old plots maniacally to kill her entire family and even manages to do so. But why would she wish death upon them and how does she go about it is basically what the book is all about. If you keep aside the flaws (which I’ll talk about later), this book isn’t too bad. Yes, it started off interestingly what with the protagonist narrating her story from prison. The story went well for a while until it reached a point where logic went out the window and it was all downhill from there.
Part of the reason why this book didn’t work for me was because of its repetitive nature. We see the main character as a bitter person who is unhappy with almost everyone and everything around her. She has a childhood trauma that remains unresolved which ultimately pushes her to be a murderer. But what didn’t sit well with me was how amateurish all her plans sounded and yet they somehow worked. Throw in her constant cribbing about the rich and mighty and by the time the book ended, I was honestly so done with her.
This book is sort of an example of how at times great plots end up crashing because of not-so-good execution. Bella’s writing was quite nice and I may read more books by her. All in all, this wasn’t a terrible book and there are many who even loved it so I may very well be on the unpopular opinion team.
I truly wanted to like this book.
