Wonder Woman & Justice League Dark: The Witching Hour
by James Tynion IV
I’m more than a little miffed about how this was collected regarding the JLD book (3 issues in and then a crossover? Really??) That said, Tynion does a good job restructuring key components of the magical world in the DC Universe. I wish we got to see how they all functioned BEFORE they were torn down and rebuilt, but I like the direction Tynion’s going in and look forward to seeing these new cornerstones explored in the future.
With all the world building going on, the characters all kinda get lost in all the plot. The legend of Hecate was fascinating and I applaud Tynion for how he was able to incorporate her story within the multiple pantheons that exist in the DC Universe, but if you’re looking for stories exploring the main cast, your better off reading the other JLD books by Tynion. Witching Hour is more mythology than it is character drama. That said, this book is NECESSARY to understand everything plot wise going on in the current JLD, so consider Witching Hour a necessary detour when reading those stories. It might not be the best story, but it is some of the best mythology Tynion’s written for the DC Universe and hopefully it pays off for some great stories down the line.
