Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong
by James W. Loewen
Pop quiz times my fellow Readers, did you learn in your American History class that Hellen Keller was a hardcore socialist? Or about how Sunset towns? No? Then this is the book for you.
The revised version of this book came out, I believe, in 2007. That was the year I graduated high school. It's very likely that one of the books he surveyed was the I used. (Gonna be honest I don't remember my textbook's name)I do however remember quite a few things from American History. Turns out many of them were wrong.
The overall point Loewen is trying to make is not "everything is wrong and here's what's right." The point is that history is not a set of dead facts that are to be memorized. History has controversy, it's messy. Sometimes we're not the good guy. Our great American Heroes were actual human beings and that means that they were not perfect. And that's interesting. The point of school should not be to memorize items for a test but to learn how to think critically. This book corrects a lot of misrepresentations and errors but our overall goal is to challenge why those errors are there in the first place. It was a great read and I recommend to pretty much everyone.
