The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman
4.0

Joseph is a vampire.

In the mean streets of NYC. Where the rats, bums, and low life losers live. I should know, I grew up in NYC not too far from where he's talking about.

But on a serious note these Vampires are not nice. They don't charm and live in luxury mansions. They don't dress nice. In fact they have to charm you just to lead you somewhere to bite you just to get their blood intake. And Joseph, our main protagonist, is much more of a survivalist than a fighter. Wanting to be with his gang of vampires in the underground tunnels of NYC. Okay with life like that...except when something new shows up it might not be as easy to survive.

This is a dark, dirty, occasionally nasty story with some actually funny moments sprinkled due to the lead character's humor. I listened audible and thanks to the author being the one to voice it, you get a real sense of how the characters sounded in his head, and his work is great. The side cast is all interesting though slightly underdeveloped at times (You'll see why) and there's more questions than answers at times, even at the end.

However, I really did dig the majority of this book. The middle to the end is fantastic, with lots of "oh shit" moments. The villains, if want to call them that since everyone is pretty shitty, are horrifying and they do a good job of selling them.

This is a 4 out of 5 for me.
