I enjoyed this book - it has a writing style that is easy to relax into. It did take me a while to really appreciate it, at first I was casually enjoying listening to the audiobook but perhaps halfway through started to develop a stronger interest in the plot and characters.
There is a strong focus on family, and particularly on the relationship between sisters, which I like. I do feel that the atmosphere wasn't quite there for me, it didn't feel whimsical or magical even though magic features heavily (although I have seen several other reviews that disagree!). I do however think the author managed a really good balance between featuring some dark and serious topics, but not feeling overall like a very dark or creepy story (which would generally not be to my personal taste).
The book is definitely towards the upper end of middle grade, and would probably appeal to a lot of YA readers.
I also have to mention the absolutely gorgeous cover designs (front and back) by Melissa Castrillón! They are absolutely perfect for the novel.
I already own books 2 and 3 in the series and will be continuing on with it.
