Butcher & Blackbird
by Brynne Weaver
This book had a great opening chapter. I loved the banter Sloan & Rowan had right off the back. BUT as the story went on it started to lose that sparkle. I found myself wanting to skim the last few chapters. I loved the premise. Two vigilante serial killers, a little killing competition & falling in love. I wish there was more mystery in finding their targets, more dark moments, more killing and showing each other their dark sides. The whole serial killer stuff was lighter than I would have wanted. (If you've seen Criminal Minds, you won't be phased.)
Now lets talk characters. Sloan started off great. She was independent and badass. I loved her friendship with Lark and her origin story. Her style was unique and intelligent, but as she fell in love she lost some of those things I loved. I hate when a FMC gives things up for the MMC without it feeling like an even compromise.
Rowan... can a serial killer also be a golden retriever? He was soooooo smitten. I love the interactions with his brothers and because of that I am likely to read the next book in the series. I loved that he was a chef and that he was always thinking about Sloan in their "off seasons". He lost me in the smut scenes though. I get the appeal of an alpha type, but it was so bossy. I wanted him to worship her more. The smut felt underdeveloped & left me wishing for more, but also less.
