The Martian by Andy Weir
5.0

Reading The Martian is like drinking a hot cup of hazelnut latte. I love Hazelnut latte but I hate hot beverage, so it's like, I want to drink this as fast as I could but I couldn't because it's hot. That's exactly what it felt like. I wanted to read The Martian as fast as I could, I literally couldn't stop. I understand that a lot of people think that The Martian is boring because there's a lot of math going on but I actually kind of enjoyed it even though I'm not very good at math (or the science part either, to be honest). But I really loved it. I was a bit skeptical because I know that it's about a man who got stranded on Mars, naturally he'd be there alone for a very long time so I wasn't sure that the book would be anything but boring but damn it, Andy Weir actually pulled it off. It was a very heartwarming story, the characters are at times funny and you know, it's a serious book so you need the jokes for comic relief . I just... wow, words fail me. Just imagining all the research and how long it'd take is just mind blowing. And this book has all the right element, elements that define a good book for me personally. I also learned things from this book like:

1. When in trouble, don't panic. Whatever happens to me, it wouldn't be as bad as what happened to Mark. Literally. He got into troubles a million times probably but he never gives up. Really puts things into perspective because when I got into small troubles I usually bitch about it or get angry, I never really learn how to get out of that situation. Which brings me to number 2.
2. Solve the problems, don't just accept your faith, complain and cry about it.
3. I also learned that I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention at school. (I got A+ for chemistry that one time in the 10th grade and everyone got bad marks and I was awfully proud of it. Under different circumstances I'd probably make a good astronaut. Ha!)

So I think this book deserves 5/5 especially for effort! Overall I just really enjoyed it, maybe sometimes I didn't get some part but I'm not complaining. I think the ending was a bit too rushed (hey I need to know what happens after he got rescued, alright) like hey! I've been rescued, bye now. Which, you know, sucks.

“Teddy swiveled his chair and looked out the window to the sky beyond. Night was edging in. “What must it be like?” he pondered. “He’s stuck out there. He thinks he’s totally alone and that we all gave up on him. What kind of effect does that have on a man’s psychology?”
He turned back to Venkat. “I wonder what he’s thinking right now.”
LOG ENTRY: SOL 61

How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re mammals! Makes no sense.”

“Naturally,” Teddy said. “Astronauts are inherently insane. And really noble. What’s the idea?”

“It’s a strange feeling. Everywhere I go, I’m the first. Step outside the rover? First guy ever to be there! Climb a hill? First guy to climb that hill! Kick a rock? That rock hadn’t moved in a million years!
I’m the first guy to drive long-distance on Mars. The first guy to spend more than thirty-one sols on Mars. The first guy to grow crops on Mars. First, first, first!”

“Turns out the “L” in “LCD” stands for “Liquid.” I guess it either froze or boiled off. Maybe I’ll post a consumer review. “Brought product to surface of Mars. It stopped working. 0/10.”

“Johanssen:
Your poster outsold the rest of ours combined. You’re a hot chick who went to Mars. You’re on dorm-room walls all over the world.
Looking like that, why are you such a nerd? And you are, you know. A serious nerd.”

“I started the day with some nothin’ tea. Nothin’ tea is easy to make. First, get some hot water, then add nothin’. I experimented with potato skin tea a few weeks ago. The less said about that the better.”
