The Fate of the Tearling by Erika Johansen
2.0

I’m so mad.
I am just so mad.
Book one was a classic high fantasy story set in a matriarchal society which I was 100% there for. Book two was a mind-boggling, genre-bending genius work with some of the best twists that I could never have seen coming.

I struggled from the beginning with book three. There were two many storylines (many of which were never resolved) and the sections were too short to make it easy to keep track of. The story just kept getting more and more complicated, with more and more ridiculous things happening, often with no explanation, and then suddenly in the last two chapters we’re presented with a get-out-of-jail-free-card style ending that raised more questions than it answered. Sure, the kingdom’s safe, but is Kelsea okay? Are we supposed to believe she’s totally fine with the sudden reappearance of her mother, who she believed to be dead and who seems to have no interest in actually parenting? Where did the whole printing press storyline go? WHERE DID THESE SUDDEN POWERS COME FROM? So many questions. The first two books were so so good, and it was just a shame to finish on such a let-down.
