abbie_ 's review for:
Full Dark, No Stars
by Stephen King
So I decided to bump Full Dark, No Stars up my tbr list after my friend Johann gave it a glowing review, and after reading it I can confirm (for probably the 2721st time) that she has amazing taste and that we are bookish soulmates! THIS. COLLECTION. IS. FANTASTIC.
.
It's made up of four novellas, which for me is great already because I'm not a huge fan of the super short short story; I like to have at least 70 pages to be able to get my teeth into the plot, engage with the characters, feel connected! And Full Dark delivers all of this.
.
Each story in the collection concerns principally human acts of evil, darkness, and just plain bad decisions. The discomfort comes from being forced to wonder, WHAT IF? What if you found yourself in one of these situations? A bad decision coming back to haunt you. A horrific encounter on a deserted road. A choice between a bad thing in your life or inflicting that thing on someone else. A discovery that leads you to realise your other half is not at all who you thought they were...
.
King does not hold back on the brutality in these stories, especially in Big Driver. It's very uncomfortable reading, but as with most King novels we're rewarded in the end with just payback. Along with Big Driver, my other favourite was A Good Marriage, as I'm a sucker for a female protagonist and I found myself more engrossed in these stories than the other two. But seriously, all 4 are excellent!
