I agree with other readers who noted that Kelley clearly does not like Oprah. There is a judgmental tone throughout the book. I was a little surprised that this book was published in 2010, as the author has almost no understanding of race or trauma. She seems to believe that wealth absolves Black people from experiencing racism, which is simply not true. In fact, the author mentions Henry Louis Gates multiple times, and his arrest in front of his own home happened before this book was published, i.e. Kelley would have had plenty of examples of the racism experienced by rich Black people by 2010. Similarly, Kelley is bizarrely lacking in empathy about Oprah's experiences of childhood sexual abuse. At first, I wondered if this was just an attempt at journalistic objectivity, but the tone and writing are not objective in the least. That said, I found the interviews and histories shared very eye-opening. I think if one is able to look past the editorializing, there is robust and interesting info here that gives a fairly thorough outsider's look at a present-day cultural icon.
