I've read this book a few times since I first saw it in my library. I think I first read it when I was in middle school, then a few more times since then. After reading now that I'm in my 20s, I realize how some books don't age with you. Don't get me wrong, I liked this book when I was younger and still like now-- I just don't like it as much as I remember I did. If I were to have picked up this book now, without having read it before, I'm not sure if I would have finished it.

My only problem with the book is how unlikeable Delaney is through over half of the book. She's one of those stereotypical "tough" girlsTM, who hate the world and the world hates them, or at least they think it does. She's rude, mean, and very self centered until about chapter 9 or 10 when she does an almost completely 180 and becomes much more likeable.

The book is kinda slow up until she becomes a better person and starts to realize she is the problem and not everyone else, but it's still an interesting story. It's cute and has magic (and honestly who doesn't love cute magic?), it's worth reading if you can get through Delaney's attitude starting out. Another plus is that there is both a lesbian romance and a semi-accurate (from my knowledge, I have no personal experience in the matter) depiction of someone with autism/on the spectrum. Of course, being that this book came out in 2011, it's never actually said out loud. Some of the characters aren't as stereotypical as you usually get in a YA novel. The head cheerleader isn't a horrible person but actually is really nice to everyone, and the only person in the way of Delaney is herself.

Overall I give it 3 stars, one for nostalgic reasons, one for a cute story with magic, and one for trying to portray characters who aren't typical.
