I love the Black Jewels series but this is nothing like that. I ignored this book for awhile. To be honest, the cover put me off at first. Also, its an urban fantasy not like the series I love from Anne Bishop and I had been disappointed in the past when authors of books I loved tried different genre. But eventually, I gave this a try.

Its a slow build. Much like the Daughter of The Blood was now that I think about it. You're following this girl/woman as she navigates this new place with new people all without disclosing her past. The other have secrets too. And everything is very insular. Every once in awhile we get flashes of things going on outside the community but with no frame of reference so it can be a bit confusing.

What kept me going was how interesting Meg is. That burning need to know what is going on with her. But also what is going on with the Others too. So basically curiosity and plain old good writing, kept me reading on. Then about half-way through things start picking up. Some action happens , the Others get more friendly and so talk more but still so many secrets. I must say that the ending is explosive both literally and figuratively. Not expecting that at all. And yet, there are still so many mysteries.

I am glad I finally decided to read this. I cannot believe I am just now reviewing it. Cannot believe I have not read the next two already but I will fix that pronto. Anne Bishop does not disappoint.
