totallytales 's review for:
The Devil and the Dark Water
by Stuart Turton
Plot:
Three impossible crimes.
Two unlikely detectives.
One deadly voyage.
One of my most anticipated reads, I absolutely loved The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle... it didn't reach those heady heights for me but I still enjoyed it... Maybe, it fell short because my expectations were too high?
It is a creative, original story with plenty of twists & turns to keep you engaged until that ending which I really loved.
People: There is a vast array of characters on the ship to keep track of but they were introduced gradually & were all distinct enough from each other I didn't get them muddled up. Some were more likable than others - I particularly enjoyed Sara & Lia characters, as well as the Sherlockian relationship between Pipp's & Arent.
Pace: A medium-paced novel with an atmosphere of danger & fear from the start.
Pick up if you enjoy: S J Parris & Boris Akunin
Disclaimer: A huge thanks to the gang at Tandem Collective UK & Bloomsbury Publishing for sending me this title. All opinions are my own.
