The One-in-a-Million Boy
by Monica Wood
This was another Chirp purchase, and I'm glad I bought it. I will likely give this a re-listen. I had several "ah" and near tear moments with this one.
This bops around in time, and has some interesting presentations (portions are "interview" style, with the Ona answering 'unheard' questions on tape). There are chapters from Ona's perspective in the present, from the boy's father's perspective (in the present) and conversations between Ona and the boy in the past ... I don't think it's a spoiler to say that the boy has died, thus the father fulfilling the responsibilities.
Loved all the Guinness Book Records listed (some are so silly!) and the thought of setting some for living the longest (or driving at the oldest age). The driving scenarios were timely, as I've been working with my son to get his license. I was tempted to tell him "If Ona can do it, so can you!" it doesn't matter that she is imaginary ;)
I'll remember this book very fondly! Lots of lovely characters that you grow to care for and ache with. Maybe I'm just emotional ... tearing up just reflecting about the book.
