This middle-school, manga-influenced comic is my favorite yet by Svetlana Chmakova. Peppi Torres is the new girl at Berrybrook, who finds friends in the art club. She'd like be to friends with Jaime Thompson as well- but he is in the science club, and the two clubs are sworn rivals! The drama and one-upmanship only increase when the principle of the school sets the clubs in competition for a single open table at the upcoming school club fair. This familiar plot outline is infused with humor, life, and sweetness by Chmakova who clearly knows the tropes of manga like the back of her hand. She gently pokes fun at the form while also drawing on its strength in this tale of friendship and growing collaboration.
