The Bone Season
by Samantha Shannon
I first read The Bone Season last year, after I had read The Priory of the Orange Tree, and knew I needed to find other works by Samantha Shannon. And yes, while the 2013 version did have the pitfalls some other reviews mention - info-dumping at the start, choppy at places, etc - I was still enthralled and loved it and had to read the other books available. The world was engaging and new and in-depth, and I needed to know more about Paige and Warden and watch their relationship develop.
(And that was a big surprise to me, as despite loving TPOTOG and Samantha Shannon's writing, modern-day fantasy/sci-fi is generally not what I like and was the biggest reason I originally put off reading it.)
I've just finished the 10th Anniversary Special Edition, and it blew my original thoughts for TBS out of the water. The biggest issue I had with the original was the beginning, as it took me a bit to get into the story, but the 2023 edition didn't have that issue in the least. It still explains the world, but it's a lot more engaging when it happens so you barely notice. Characters are significantly more developed and everything flows together beautifully.
If you've read the original TBS, you need to read this edition. If you didn't finish it, or wasn't too impressed with the 2013 edition, I highly recommend trying the 2023 revision. It doesn't change the story in any significant way, but it absolutely uses Samantha Shannon's current skill in telling the same story. If you've been considering TBS, pick up this edition to do it. I cannot recommend this edition enough.
