A Virtue's Calling
by Lexi Cook, Lexi Cook
Thanks to BookSirens for giving me this wonderful ARC! Opinions here are all mine.
This is a YA fantasy story with multiple POVs expanding at different times as well. It's based on some ancient Filipino tribes' mythology.
Choska is going to become the chief of his island and the Sea Virtue Holder. That was his destiny and now that his father died it was his time to rule and fight the Hazen beasts with his waterbending powers. There's another Virtue Holder of the Land who got earthbending powers (come on that's exactly what they do. It's obviously inspired by ATLA a little) He has to train and make hard decisions that may push his family and friends away.
Marie is a new high school graduate who's trying to figure her future out. She'd love to become the owner of her mom's Caffè as she loves cooking, especially with her best friend Emerald. One day while she's at her favorite place, the beach she hears a voice that calls her to the sea. From there she gets the Virtue of the Sea. But magic isn't supposed to exist, and even so why is she the one? There haven't been any beasts or magic for ages. Why now? Is there a priest who can guide her? Or a Land Virtue Holder? Is her city in danger?
This was so much fun. It took me some days to read because I had school stuff to do otherwise I would have finished it fast because it was quite interesting. The beginning was intriguing but then it was kinda boring until it took its pace by 30%. I liked the main characters, especially Jada, Kade, and Rose! Emerald was fine, but not that important. I liked the world-building, the magic system, the culture, history, it was all so cool! I liked the diversity, the friendships, the couples, all of them! So sweet! The ending was harsh… I'm not crying but it still is a bummer. It is kinda bittersweet I guess. Lessons learned, sacrifices made, moving on, this is life.
What shocked me the most was that it is written by a teenager!!! She got published at 18! Wow… I'm almost 18 myself and boy I'm not close to publishing any of my books. It's so well written for a debut book, I'm impressed. I'd say this author got a future if she countries with philosophical YA mythology books. The cover is so gorgeous! It's what got me into this book anyways!
