I was really looking forward to this book, and it would have been a very good one… if it had ended about two hundred pages earlier. The Secret History is a fiction book that explores the relationships and conflicts between a group of clever college students, with a little bit of murder and the study of Ancient Greece thrown in for fun. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style, and the beginning of the book was quite intriguing. But all of the characters are pretentious and arrogant, which was kind of the point of the book but made them incredibly annoying to read about. As the story went on, it felt like the main conflict/plot came to an end (or should have come to an end) around page 350. From there, it sort of disintegrates into unrelated nonsense about the characters, that didn’t really have a point and only served to annoy me further. Overall, this book was interesting, and the author’s style of writing was unique and engaging, but The Secret History did not live up to my expectations.
