1) I really like the way this book handled queerness and let it exist between soft and sexual without leaning too much into either direction. With a lot of queer relationships in media, they either get completely softened or overly sexualized and Jake and Allister are somewhere between those two points. 
2) I do not like the fact that the mass shooter decides to shoot up a school because he was almost raped and his mother believed that he was actually forcing himself on the rapist. I'm utterly exhausted with this stupid ass trope, particularly in books about gay men. I don't want to read about rape. It's not fun and, even if the point is that it's a wrong stereotype, it always ends up playing into the stereotype that adult gay men are predators.
