I expected to like The Umbrella Academy so much more than I did.. The TV show got me really hyped and me being me I had to pick up the graphic novel first, but it just didn’t work for me.
Firstly, I didn’t like the art style of this book. It was made up of harsh angular line work and a muted color pallet. I just didn’t find it particularly nice to look at.
This story wasn’t what I was expecting. From the first page I was bombarded with monkey butlers, evil robot Gustave Eiffel, and half-ape, half-man space boys. All of the wacky speculative elements were jarring and I had to re-read the first dozen pages just to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. This isn’t a flaw of the story, I just thought the comic would be a bit more realistic than it ended up being, which hampered my enjoyment.
I didn’t connect to any of the characters. I’d heard people raving about the dysfunctional found family in this book, and while I didn’t get very far into the comic, the parts I did read didn’t leave any lasting impressions in terms of characters.
Ultimately, there was nothing about Umbrella Academy that made me want to read more. I can’t say the characters, world, or plot were bad, but it didn’t entice me into picking The Umbrella Academy back up after putting it down. Maybe I’ll still watch the show.
