I finished The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones on January 6th and on January 7th, white racist nationalists broke into our country’s capitol building defending Donald Trump’s false narrative about the presidential election. Wow. What a wild statement to type. This book tackled race relations in America in the 1950s and it’s a lot to process how much work we, as a country, still have to do.
The Invincible Summer of Juniper Jones is a young adult novel about Ethan, a biracial boy, who stays with his aunt and uncle in rural Alabama in the summer of 1955. Juniper Jones, a white girl from this small town, befriends Ethan even though the rest of the town writes him off because of the color of his skin. This book beautifully tackles race, family dynamics and friendships. But fair warning: it’s a tear jerker.
I recommend this one and wish it existed when I was in high school!
